The 77th edition of the Vuelta a España has been presented in Madrid and should offer a well-balanced course with opportunities for all types of cyclists.

As already known, the 2022 Spanish Grand Tour will kick off in Utrecht, the Netherlands on August 19 and end in Madrid on September 11. The race will include 21 stages which will include nine high altitude finishes, two time trials, seven mountain days, four medium mountain, six flat stages and two that end at high altitude.
The 2022 Vuelta will start with a 23.3 kilometer team time trial in Utrecht without technical difficulties and will be followed by a 175.1 kilometer course on the second day of competition, which will lead the peloton of ‘s-Hertogenbosch in Utrecht, mostly flat and that should end in a massive sprint.
The Dutch adventure will end with a 193.2 kilometer long stage with a start and finish in Breda which will also end with a sprint final. After a day of rest, the competition will resume in Vitoria-Gasteiz, in the Basque Country, with a mid-mountain stage with a finish in Laguardia which will eventually end with a reduced sprint.
The fifth day of competition of the Spanish race will be 187 kilometers long between Irun and Bilbao on a course with five mountain passes, and a final part that will make a selection in the peloton, although the finish line is after a long descent.
On the sixth stage of the 77th edition of the Grand Tour, the riders will face their first mountain event on a 180-kilometer course between Bilbao and Ascensión al Pico Jano. San Miguel de Aguayo, which includes one climb of the second category and two of the first, including the finish.
A mid-mountain stage will follow which, although it includes a first category climb halfway through, will likely be without a lot of action as riders might try to save energy for what is to come, which means the escapees will have a chance to win. The weekend will start with a 154.4 kilometer stage in Asturias between La Pola de Laviana and Colláu Fancuaya, on a mountain route that ends with a first category climb of around 10 kilometers.
The ninth stage will close the first week of the race and will also give an unobstructed view of the general classification with a 175.5 kilometer course which ends on a short and explosive wall which will push the candidates’ legs to their limits.
After the second day of rest, the race will move to Alicante, another cycling territory where runners feel at home when they train there in winter. The tenth stage will be a 31.1 kilometer individual time trial which, although completely flat, will likely include the difficulties of the Levante winds.
The fast men will have another chance on the 11th stage of the race, on a route of 193 kilometers with a start in ElPozo Alimentación and a finish in Cabo de Gata. Malaga will host the race on the 12th stage, with a route between Salobreña and Peñas Blancas. Estepona is completely flat but will have a 20 kilometer ascent of a first class climb to the finish line.
After such a difficult final, the peloton will have a relatively calm day on the 13th day of competition, on an almost flat course of 171 kilometers between Ronda and Montilla, but in which accumulated exhaustion could play a role. The climbs come back the next day, on a 160.3 kilometer route between Montoro and the Sierra de La Pandera, which has its finish line at the end of a first class ascent.
The second week of racing will have a tough finish on the 15th stage, which will take place over a 148.1 kilometer course, and includes a first class climb and a finish on a non-class climb that will likely continue to shape the overall standings. .
The last week of Vuelta 2022 will start with a stage between Sanlúcar de Barrameda and Tomares on a 188.9 kilometer course that will be completely flat and another good luck for the sprinters. Although the next stage starts with a flat part, it will end after 160 kilometers on a second category climb to the Monasterio de Tentudía.
The peloton will set off again in the mountains during the 18th stage, with a start in Trujillo and a finish at the Alto del Piornal and which will have a route of 191.7 kilometers with a second category climb and two first category, including the final , and it will be a good day for the strong teams to try their hand at securing places in the general classification.
