Toyota’s GR010 is still undefeated in FIA World Endurance Championship competition, but it may have a weakness.
The No. 7 GR010, the car shared by Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and Jose Maria Lopez, took the overall victory despite an electrical problem forcing the team to stop and restart the car on the track. The car was by far the fastest of the day, quickly cutting the time lost to Alpine’s LMP1 entry in the final hour and ultimately taking the full minute victory after a little help from a yellow of the complete course.
More worrying for Toyota is the fate of their No.8. This car failed early and often, starting with a failed brake component in just the second hour of racing. Then came a fuel pressure issue, an issue that actually derailed the car’s day. The issue forced Toyota’s Gazoo Racing to run the car in shorter stints for the remainder of the race, but that was not a problem for a car already far from the competition.
The last two Le Mans Hypercar cars, the two entrances to Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus, weren’t more reliable. A car, their # 708, started the race with a cylinder. The other, the No.709, performed well for the first five hours before a repair forced them to withdraw as the Toyota caught up with the leaders again. SCG’s pace should give them real reason to be optimistic about the future, but their reliability issues are hard to ignore.
Thanks in large part to all this LMH attrition, the No. 22 United Autosports winner in LMP2 completed the overall podium. Porsche’s No.92 factory entry is the winner of a fairly contested two-team GTE-Pro battle against AF Corse’s Ferraris, while AF Corse’s No.83 Ferrari is victorious in GTE- Am.
The next WEC race is the big one: the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Toyota’s GR010s will be the exceptionally heavy favorites to win the 24-hour classic overall.
