This new 9 kg (19 lb) electric bike claims to be the lightest in the world

The Italian design company ARES presents its ARES Super Leggera electric bike, which it claims to be the lightest electric bike in the world.

The 9 kg (19.8 lb) electric road bike was produced as part of a partnership between design company ARES and High Performance Systems (HPS), a leading engineering company that develops technology for mobility.

The heart of the Super Leggera Electric Bike is a 200 watt motor designed to provide modest electric assistance to riders.

An average human can generate 200 watts of power while pedaling a bicycle, so this is definitely not a powerful solution. Instead, the “Watt Assist” system developed by HPS is intended to provide a slight boost to riders, helping to gain the upper hand over hills by compensating with the level of assistance of a typical human rider.

While HPS provided the technical know-how, ARES was responsible for the ultralight carbon fiber frame and components. The result is an ultralight electric road bike, as the company explains:

“ARES and HPS have worked together for the past two years to perform countless lab tests and travel thousands of kilometers on the road, using the experience of former professional riders to refine the dynamic qualities of this race-style electric bike. ARES managing the design of the framework and finishes; HPS brings its expertise in mechanics and engineering. The result is a high-tech carbon fiber bike that currently does not exist on the market: the ARES Super Leggera from HPS is a high-end electric bike weighing just 9 kg, a world first.

ARES claims the Super Leggera is the lightest electric bike to date, although the design company can drop a few grams – and that also depends on how you count those grams.

Technically, we’ve seen lighter e-bikes, like the 6.872 kg (15.15 lb) Freicycle e-bike. While this is probably the lightest electric bike in the world right now, it was a custom DIY build, so that doesn’t really matter when discussing production e-bikes.

The Domestic HPS is probably the lightest current production e-bike at just 8.5 kg (18.7 lb) and thus exceeds the ARES Super Leggera by around 500 grams. But that weight also depends on whether or not you count other key components in the total, such as the pedals (often a “bring your own” affair in competitive cycling).

ARES has certainly been ahead of the lighter models in other cycle niches.

Hummingbird has the lightest folding electric bike at 10.3 kg (22.7 lbs), while Trek claims to have the lightest full suspension electric mountain bike at 15.75 kg (34.72 lbs).

ARES is currently planning a first limited series of 24 Super Leggera electric bikes, placing the bikes right on the production side of the gray area between shop and custom.

Such a lightweight design and limited production comes at a cost, however – in this case the cost is € 18,950. Ouch!

That’s a big request from a company that still hasn’t released a number of other key specs on the bike, such as battery capacity or major components.

But when it comes to claiming the lightest electric bike in the world, suffice it to say that ARES definitely tops the list, even though there are technically a few lighter e-bikes around these days.
