Cougars earn podiums and personal bests at Rice


HOUSTON –Houston’s track and field team posted personal bests and podium finishes at the J. Fred Duckett Invitational Saturday at Rice University.

Sarah Howe started the day with a first-place finish in the women’s pole vault with a score of 4.07. The senior surpassed her competition by clearing two bars after her competition.

During his first outdoor meeting of the season, Camille Rutherford quickly stood out by finishing the women’s 100 meters with a score of 11.69 for first place. The second raced in the first runs of the day, but her time ended as the best time of the day.

In his college 400-meter hurdles debut, De’Vion Wilson clocked 51.63 for first place. Blacksmith of Destiny added another podium finish for the Cougars by finishing second in the women’s 100-meter hurdles with a personal best 13.86.

Claire Meyer finished the evening with a first-place finish in the women’s 5,000 with a personal best time of 17:29.70. The second shaved nearly a full minute off her time while earning her third first-place finish of the season.

The Cougars grabbed two podiums in the women’s discus throw as Hailey Pollard took second place and daisy monie followed in third place. Pollard finished with a throw of 47.30m while Monie threw a personal best 45.34m.

The Cougars will spend the next week of their season on the road as sprinters and relay teams head to the Penn Relays and pole vaulters and pitchers face off at Texas A&M.
