Formula Junior Driver Challenge

The Supplemental Ruleset (in addition to the SCCA Formula Junior ruleset and guidelines) is being discussed online.

The Formula Junior Driver Challenge has been created to enhance the current SCCA class offering for families with FJ drivers. The Challenge Series strictly adheres to the SCCA rules and guidelines, as administered by the host Region, ensuring nationwide parity between drivers, especially important to families who travel out of Region.

The primary goal of the Formula Junior Challenge Series is to encourage families to attend several National Tour and Divisional events during the available season. The Formula Junior classes have been added to the SCCA class line-up in an effort to improve family participation at a Regional level. The classes have been successful, Regionally, for families fortunate enough to have FJ aged drivers interested in participating, the ability to purchase and transport a Kart, and most importantly, Regional support for the classes.

By bringing the FJ drivers to the National and Divisional events, the young drivers are able to meet and compete with drivers from other Regions. Unlike the adults who autocross, the FJ drivers are not allowed to jump classes for more or less competition, they are grouped by age.

At the end of the year, there will be no one Formula Junior Champion in any class. "Points" will be accrued Nationally (in the Challenge), Divisions will crown Champions, and the families will have memories (and new friends) to keep forever. The intention of the Challenge is to recognise and reward the drivers and families who make the effort to support the Formula Junior classes at a National level.

Supplementals for 2007

1. No Junior Driver shall race 'up' a class beyond the age limitation set by the SCCA for insurance purposes. FJC drivers must be at least 5 years old on the day of competition. When the FJC drivers 'ages up' to 8 years old, during a season (January 1 to December 31), the driver has the option of remaining in FJC for the remainder of the season, or moving to FJB. When an FJB driver 'ages up' to 12 years old, during a season (January 1 to December 31), the driver has the option of remaining in FJC for the remainder of the season, or moving to FJA. When an FJA drivers 'ages up' to 18 years old, he may complete the season. If a driver decides to option up to the next higher age group class, he/she may not return to the previous class and continue to accrue points in that class. The intent of this rules is to strictly follow the SCCA minimum age requirements for each class without penalizing a driver whose birthday falls within the racing season.

2. The host region Youth Karting Steward administers the individual events, not the Formula Junior Driver Challenge. The host region may modify any rules and guidelines as allowed by the SCCA with respect to run order, engine configurations, chassis configurations, weight, tires, and other items not specifically addressed in these Supplementals.

3. At the conclusion of a National Tour, or ProSolo, it is the responibility of the participants to notify the FJ Challenge pointskeeper (dale @ seeley dot com) via email of the event and where the official results are posted online.

4. Events listed on the Schedule page are eligible for points.

5. The primary purpose of the Results page is to reward attendance at National Tour, ProSolo, and Divisional events. An attempt will be made to rank drivers in each class based on any comparisons that are available, including actual same event competition and projected results based on previous results during the same racing season. Without a National Championship event, it will not be a perfect ranking.

6. In the event a change to these supplementals is required, they may be updated at any time.

7. National Challenge Rankings will be based on the following ruleset. Note that attendence in multiple National events may improve a drivers ranking as a tie-breaker and when comparing drivers who have, or may not have raced each other. Points from (up to) the best three (3) National Tour and/or Pro finishes for each driver will be used to determine rankings. Having a National Championship event would make this all a lot easier....

Points will be awarded based on finishing position according to the following schedule; 1st-20, 2nd-18, 3rd-16, 4th-14, 5th-13, 6th-12, 7th-11, 8th-10, 9th-10, 10th-10, etc.
